Case Study - A Home Extension & Improving Energy Efficiency

MVHR is one of the best ways to improve energy efficiency in your home, heat recovered from the excess moisture is put back into your home along with fresh filtered air, saving on average £300 a year on heating bills!

This was a supply only project, keep reading to find out what The Air Shop supplied to make this design goal come to life!

Making your home more energy efficient and cost efficient are just two of the benefits of MVHR ventilation, it offers many more benefits including reducing pollen, pollutants and other allergy triggers in your home. It also extracts pollution and chemicals from cleaning products and appliances from your home that helps keep you and your family comfortable.

The main benefit for your home is the extraction of excess moisture from 'wet rooms' (bathrooms, kitchen, utility) which helps prevent condensation and harmful mould from developing in your home.

This 1982 home underwent a partial renovation alongside an extension to make it a more energy efficient home. Read to find out how...

MVHR diagramThe Project

The 1982 home was moved into by the Forrest family in September 2022 and underwent a project to make the home more energy efficient. An extension was added and partial renovation which included double/triple glazing throughout, insulating floors and walls and of course, MVHR ventilation.

Installation in the loft is a popular option as it allows for lots of space and accessibility for future servicing and maintenance. It's also good for keeping the system as discreet as possible and hidden out of sight. Other common places for MVHR units are in storage cupboards/utility space, as it is out of the way but still has good accessibility.

What Was Specified?

A Vent Axia Sentinel Kinetic MVHR unit was used alongside Ubbink ducting to create ventilation for this relatively airtight bungalow, this will stop condensation and mould from developing. As this home is in a rural location, the main focus for this project is keeping the home healthy and preserving heat, as a pose to air quality concerns.

The MVHR unit was fitted in the loft, due to the loft being cold the ducting and manifolds had to be insulated and an insulated cabinet build around the unit.
