POSITIVELY BRILLIANT
PIV for homes

Positive Input Ventilation is a discrete, low-maintenance and subtle retrofit solution for problems such as mould, condensation and damp within homes. Good ventilation is mould and condensations biggest enemy!

A PIV Unit offers an energy efficient method of pushing out stale moisture ladden air and replacing it with drier fresh air by gently introducing filtered air into the home and increasing the circulation of fresh air around the property - it also helps improve the indoor air quality (IAQ). A PIV Unit will get to the root cause of excessive moisture in the air that is causing issues such as mould and condensation - painting over it is like sticking a plaster!

Got Mould or condensation and need help?  A PIV Unit is one answer - there might be other options too. Call us on 033 0233 6776 or send us an enquiry if you can't see what you're looking for.

How does
PIV Work?

A PIV Unit 'positively pressurises the home' to remove stale, unhealthy and humid air and replace with fresh dry and filtered air.

Why do I get
condensation & mould?

Over 5 million homes suffer with condensation and mould - but why?

  • There is ALOT of moisture generated in a home - as many as 24 pints EVERY SINGLE DAY FROM A FAMILY OF FOUR!
  • Poor and ineffective ventilation - you need to move the air, extract the air and replace it with new - you can't see it, but it's full of things that impact the health of the building and the well-being of occupants
  • Improved Insulation - We all want to 'keep the heat in' but if you insulate, you need to ventilate to keep the home fresh and comfortable and free from condensation!
  • Ineffective heating in the space - this contributes to the problem with condensation!

PIV Enquiry

What is PIV and how does it eradicate mould and condensation?

Positive Input Ventilation is a process which dilutes, displaces and replaces unhealthy air in our homes with clean, fresh and filtered air. A PIV unit runs continuously pushing air into the home which forces the stale air and moisture out through the facades, doors, windows and other pathways.  Comfort heaters can also be added to preheat the air if required. The ventilation air is delivered into a landing or hallway. It then gently ventilates all other rooms directly as it moves throughout the property.

Do PIV Units bring in cold air?

In a house application, a PIV unit is mounted in the loft so the input air can at times be cooler than the air in your property however it may sometimes be warmer due to solar gain. There are PIV units available with heating elements which will temper the air in colder months to eliminate any concerns with cooler air. The same heating options are also available on PIV units designed for apartments and flats.

How is a PIV unit installed and how long does it take?

PIV Units are suitable for all types of property including houses and apartments.  They work best by being installed in a central area where air can be distributed evenly throughout the rest of the property.  In the loft a small hole is required for a diffuser grille to be positioned. In apartments, the unit should be mounted on an external wall and a core drill to the outside will be required. All of the PIV units require hard wiring so should be installed by an electrically competent person. Installation should be completed within one day.

Will I feel the 'positive pressure'?

All homes leak air!  The air introduced by the PIV unit will always find a way out. There are numerous leakage paths for air to escape from in our homes; such as letter boxes, key holes, trickle vents in windows, cat flaps and gaps and cracks around doors, windows and floors.  A typical 3 bedroom home will leak at around 30 litres per second. The supply air from the PIV unit would normally be introduced at 21 litres per second. So it would be like trying to blow up a balloon with a hole in it.

How much do PIV Units cost to run?

With energy prices increasing you would exepect a continuously running unit to drain your electric but units are manufactured using very efficient motors. A standard PIV unit which typically lasts around a decade if installed and maintained correctly and costs as little as £8 per year to run  A great retrofit option for existing homes.

The heater activation point can be set easily by your ventilation specialist installer. They are normally set at 10⁰C. The heater element heat up and transfer the heat to the incoming air. Although you cannot see it happening they are a little like oven thermostats and are not drawing power all of the time. They typically activate between 5% and 10% of the time. The cost over the heating season would be between £20 and £40.

A PIV unit can range between £250-£500 plus installation (which should ordinarily take a qualified electrician a day to complete) but the cost of damage to your home through damp, mould and condensation as well as any other claims for tenants can be far more costly.

How much maintenance does a PIV Unit need?

Once a PIV unit is installed, you leave it to do it's job! The unit will continuously run and be monitoring air quality and energy consumption to ensure it is effectively improving the indoor air quality within your home. It is recommended to maintain the system every 12-24 months, as dust and debris can build up in and around the motors, which can impact performance over time.  Filters should be replaced between 2-5 years depending on your air quality needs the air quality of the area where the property is.
