Monoblock vs Split Air Conditioning.

Which is right for you?

Choosing the right air conditioning system isn't always straightforward. While both monoblock and split air conditioning systems provide efficient cooling and heating, they differ significantly in installation, appearance, performance, and suitability for different property types.

Here's your guide to understanding what's right for you.

 Monoblock vs Split Air Conditioning.

The honest answer

Split systems are more efficient in large rooms and multi-room setups. Monobloc units like the Olimpia Splendid Unico are significantly easier to install, don't require an outdoor unit, and are the only practical option for millions of UK homes.

For most single-room residential applications - especially flats, listed buildings and rented properties - the monoblock wins.

 The honest answer

When to choose a monobloc AC system

  • You live in a home where outdoor units are restricted or you don't want one
  • Your property is listed or in a conservation area
  • You need to cool a single room up to 35m²
  • You want a quick, clean installation without an engineer - you can even do yourself
  • Budget is a consideration

When to choose a split AC system

  • You need to cool multiple rooms simultaneously (multi-split)
  • Your room is over 35m² and requires high cooling capacity
  • You're building a new property with outdoor plant space planned
  • You want the absolute highest energy efficiency ratings
  • You can accommodate an outdoor condenser and have planning flexibility

Not all Monobloc Air Conditioinng units are the same

The safety requirements for R290 refirgerant is set out in the international safety standard IEC 60335-2-40 - including SAFE room size and installation height.

If you're comparing Monobloc AC units, check the refrigerant charge.  When it's above 152g, it triggers extra safety requirements around room size and mounting height.

Some lower priced units offer higher refrigerant charges, that it not the problem, but how the unit it going to be installed is.  It's important to understand and read the guidance -  safety requirements can be there technically there in the small print, but they're not communicated clearly enough for an installer to easily get right. If a unit ends up fitted in too small a room, or mounted lower than it should be, that safety margin, the thing that makes propane units so safe in the first place quietly disappears.

What is the difference between a monobloc and a split air conditioner?

A monobloc air conditioner contains all of its components within a single indoor unit. It requires only two external air ducts through an outside wall and does not need a separate outdoor condenser unit.

A split air conditioner consists of an indoor unit connected to an external condenser via refrigerant pipework. Split systems are common in homes but require an outdoor unit to be installed.

Why choose a monobloc air conditioner instead of a split system?

A monobloc air conditioner is ideal when installing an outdoor condenser is not possible or desirable. This makes it particularly popular in:

  • Apartments and flats
  • Listed buildings (subject to permissions)
  • Conservation areas
  • Homes with limited outdoor space
  • Properties where aesthetics are important

The Olimpia Splendid Unico range delivers effective cooling and heating without the visual impact of an external unit.

Do monobloc air conditioners need an outdoor unit?

No. Unlike split air conditioning systems, monobloc units such as the Olimpia Splendid Unico EVO and PRO ranges do not require an external condenser.

Only two discreet wall grilles are visible externally, helping preserve the appearance of your property.

Are monobloc air conditioners as effective as split systems?

Modern monobloc air conditioners can provide excellent cooling and heating performance for appropriately sized rooms.

While high-capacity split systems may be better suited to very large spaces, premium monobloc units like the Unico EVO and PRO ranges are designed to deliver powerful climate control with the added benefit of easier installation and no outdoor unit.

How energy efficient are monobloc air conditioners?

The latest monobloc air conditioners offer high levels of energy efficiency, particularly models equipped with inverter technology and heat pump functionality.

The Olimpia Splendid Unico range is designed to provide effective climate control while helping to reduce energy consumption compared to older air conditioning systems.
